Correctional Service confirms custody but withholds exact location
Security has been significantly strengthened at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following the transfer of the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to the facility.
His relocation comes a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced him to life imprisonment.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Justice James Omotosho, who delivered the judgment, ruled that Kanu must be held in a protected custodial environment, noting that the Kuje Correctional Centre was unsuitable due to past prison breaks and heightened security threats.
Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed on Friday that his client had been moved to Sokoto, a development he described as deeply concerning. He told Saturday Punch that the decision places Kanu far from his legal representatives, relatives, and supporters, complicating access and communication. Ejimakor appealed for calm among Ndigbo and assured that legal steps were underway to challenge the transfer.
Although officials at the Sokoto Custodial Centre declined to confirm Kanu’s arrival, Saturday Punch observed a visible increase in security deployment around the premises. Armed personnel were stationed at multiple points within and outside the facility. Several residents reported seeing military trucks entering the area, indicating an unusual level of security reinforcement.
One resident, who requested anonymity, said, “We saw soldiers entering in trucks this evening. The security here has never been this tight.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Jane Osuji, confirmed that Kanu remains in the Service’s custody. However, she declined to disclose his specific location, citing security protocols and ongoing procedures.
