EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently approved the hike, citing rising operational costs.
However, the decision has sparked outrage, with the NLC insisting on a return to the old tariff and warning of mass protests if the increase is not reversed.
The labour union argued that the tariff hike was unjust, especially for Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship, including the soaring cost of fuel, food, and electricity. It noted that the increase would disproportionately affect a population earning a minimum wage of N70,000.
Speaking on the issue, the Chairman of the House Committee on Communications, Peter Akpatason, confirmed that discussions were underway with the NLC to dissuade them from proceeding with the demonstration.
“The committee is engaging with labour leaders and industry operators to find a resolution that prevents further hardship for Nigerians,” Akpatason stated.
He noted that telecom operators had previously raised concerns over inadequate funding for infrastructure, which has affected service quality and network coverage. According to him, stakeholders should consider these challenges before resorting to protests.

Similarly, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, disclosed that the commission was also in talks with the NLC over the tariff adjustment.
“We are trying to engage them,” Mouka said.
