Türkiye’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, has disclosed a significant decline in the number of irregular Nigerian migrants in Türkiye, revealing that the figure has dropped from about 9,000 to fewer than 5,000.

According to a statement issued by NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Poroy attributed the development to strengthened cooperation between Nigerian and Turkish authorities.
He explained that before he assumed office, Nigeria ranked fourth among countries with the highest number of irregular migrants in Türkiye but has now dropped out of the top six due to improved bilateral engagement.
The envoy also provided updates on Nigerian students in the region, disclosing that 4,600 Nigerians are officially enrolled in Turkish universities, while another 3,700 are studying in Northern Cyprus.
Poroy further highlighted progress in addressing the challenge of forged Schengen visas and falsified travel documents, commending Nigerian authorities and the Nigerian Embassy in Türkiye for their collaboration, which he said has led to a drastic reduction in such cases.

He said the purpose of his visit was to formally present a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), and NiDCOM.
According to him, the proposed agreement is aimed at fostering a mutually beneficial economic partnership, expanding investment opportunities, enhancing technical cooperation, and creating jobs for Nigerians.
In her remarks, Dabiri-Erewa underscored the importance of sustained collaboration in addressing irregular migration involving Nigerians in Türkiye.
She added that the proposed MoU would be finalised between NiDCOM and the Turkish Embassy to ensure timely implementation and measurable outcomes.
