United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has called for reforms to Nigeria’s security structure, urging authorities to decentralise policing to allow state governments play a greater role in tackling insecurity.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Moore made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, where he expressed concern over rising violence, particularly in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, and stressed the need for more effective protection of citizens.

He argued that granting more powers to sub-national governments would improve response to security threats, insisting that the current centralised policing system is no longer sufficient.

The congressman also highlighted attacks on Christian communities, alleging that extremist groups have continued to target places of worship and innocent civilians, and called on the Federal Government to take stronger action.
His comments come amid growing international attention on Nigeria’s security challenges and increasing calls for structural reforms to the policing system.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has intensified efforts toward establishing state police as part of broader strategies to address insecurity.
The initiative recently gained traction following steps taken by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, who inaugurated a committee to develop a framework for its implementation.

The proposed reforms are also receiving backing from President Bola Tinubu, who has urged the National Assembly to consider constitutional amendments that would enable the creation of state police.
Tinubu emphasised that decentralising policing is critical to improving security, reclaiming ungoverned spaces, and combating terrorism across the country.
