The Nigeria Customs Service has carried out a major reshuffle of its leadership structure following approvals granted during its sixty fourth Regular Meeting held on Tuesday. The new appointments and special promotions are aimed at strengthening management capacity and improving operational efficiency across the Service.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigeria Customs Service Board, chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, confirmed the elevation of five Deputy Comptroller Generals and eight Assistant Comptroller Generals. The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Customs spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, who said the decision aligns with provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and the Federal Character principles contained in Section 14(4) of the Constitution.
According to the statement, the newly appointed Deputy Comptroller Generals are Baba Imam from the North East, Isah Umar and Tijjani Abe from the North West, Timi Bomodi from the South South, and Oluyomi Adebakin from the South West. Their appointments follow the retirement of senior officers and are expected to strengthen leadership across strategic formations of the Service.
The board also approved the promotion of eight senior officers to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General. They are C G Ogbonna from the South East, I Abba Aji from the North East, G M Haruna and E J Edelduok from the South South, G Gaura and I Isyaku from the North West, M S Shuaibu from the North Central, and M D Malah from the North East. The Service said the promotions would enhance policy execution, compliance management and readiness to address challenges in trade facilitation, border security and revenue generation.
In addition to the leadership appointments, ten officers received Special Promotions for what the board described as exceptional professionalism and service delivery. The beneficiaries are Comptrollers A C Fanyam and G M Shidali, Deputy Comptrollers S Omofoma, O A Oladepo, A Y Musa, A Ogboru and A A Maiwada, Assistant Comptrollers C N Essien and H Aliyu, and Deputy Superintendent A S Shofadekan.
Presiding over the meeting, Edun said the promotions reflect the Board’s commitment to building a motivated and globally competitive workforce capable of implementing reforms under the new Customs Act. He noted that the Service must continue to strengthen internal systems and ensure that Nigeria’s borders remain secure.
The latest appointments come at a time when the Nigeria Customs Service is implementing wide ranging reforms, including automation, command restructuring and intensified anti smuggling operations. The Board said the Service must remain responsive to evolving trade, security and administrative demands.
