A youthful Nigerian mixed relay team has booked its place at the next World Athletics Championships after an impressive outing at the ongoing competition in Gaborone.
Eko Hot Blog reports that competing without some of its more experienced athletes, the quartet of Favour Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson delivered a standout performance in the 4x100m mixed relay.

The team improved on its previous African record, clocking 40.24 seconds to secure qualification despite finishing fourth in their heat.

The race was won by Canada in 40.07 seconds, followed by Germany and Netherlands, who placed second and third respectively.
Nigeria’s time was enough to rank among the best performers overall, earning them a place in the final scheduled for Sunday.
In other events, Nigeria’s relay teams in the men’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m, mixed 4x400m, and women’s 4x400m will have another opportunity to qualify through the repechage rounds after missing out in their initial heats.
The women’s 4x100m team, however, was disqualified after dropping the baton during their race.
