The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State has criticised the proposed street parking levy announced by the Lagos State Government, describing the policy as anti-people and insensitive to the current economic realities facing residents.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Dr Adebiyi Philips, the PDP expressed concern over plans by the Lagos State Parking Authority to begin charging motorists for parking on designated streets across the state before the end of 2026.

According to the opposition party, the proposed levy would place additional financial pressure on Lagosians already struggling with rising living costs and economic hardship.
Adebiyi argued that while the government claimed the initiative was aimed at improving traffic management and regulating roadside parking, the policy would end up worsening the burden on motorists and ordinary residents.
“With this initiative, the Lagos State Government has crossed the line with another anti-people policy that could negatively affect motorists across the state,” he said.
The PDP spokesperson questioned the timing of the proposal, noting that many Nigerians were still grappling with the impact of ongoing economic reforms and inflation.
He also warned that the policy could create negative public perception for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, particularly ahead of future political contests in the state.
According to him, policies introduced by government should prioritise the welfare of residents rather than impose additional financial obligations on them.

The party therefore called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reconsider the proposed levy and explore alternative ways of improving traffic management without placing extra costs on Lagosians.
Adebiyi maintained that while the PDP supports developmental initiatives and reforms capable of improving Lagos, such policies must reflect compassion and consideration for the economic condition of residents.
