EKO HOT BLOG reports that party sources disclosed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed top leaders of the APC to intervene and persuade Gawuna to remain in the party.
The development follows growing speculation that the former deputy governor is considering aligning with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya movement and possibly joining the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gawuna’s alleged plan to work with Kwankwaso to challenge Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in 2027 has triggered anxiety within the APC, while supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement are said to be encouraged by the prospect.
The speculation intensified after a delegation led by cleric Ahmed Sabo Usman paid a Sallah visit to Kwankwaso at his residence in Kano.
Sources within the APC said Gawuna has been largely unreachable in recent days, fuelling claims that he is engaged in consultations outside the country. He reportedly travelled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah during Ramadan and has yet to return, with further reports indicating he proceeded to a North African country for a private vacation.
A source familiar with the situation said the former deputy governor placed his phone on “Do Not Disturb” mode to avoid pressure from party leaders.
The situation has reportedly prompted high-level political intervention, with indications that efforts are ongoing to retain him in the APC. Insiders said the party may consider offering him an automatic ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial District in 2027.
“The president is concerned about Gawuna’s defection plan. He is made to understand that not only Governor Yusuf’s second-term ambition is at stake but the president’s support base in Kano,” a source said.

Political analysts say Gawuna’s potential alliance with Kwankwaso could significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
