Augustine University Celebrates Feast Day of Saint Augustine of Hippo

Ekohotblog reports that Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, joined the global Catholic community in celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Augustine of Hippo, a pivotal figure in the history of the Church known for his scholarly contributions and devout life.

 

The event, held at the University Chapel, featured a solemn Holy Mass led by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ogundele.

 

The Mass, celebrated on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, was attended by members of staff and students, marking the annual observance of the university’s patron saint.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Ogundele underscored the enduring relevance of St. Augustine’s teachings, encouraging the congregation to live by the values embodied by the saint.

 

He urged attendees to turn away from sin, guide their children in the ways of God, and embrace lives marked by service, good character, and love for one another.

 

Rev. Fr. Ogundele further highlighted the importance of aligning one’s life with God’s will, drawing on the inspirational life of St. Augustine.

Known for his profound writings and theological insights, St. Augustine’s journey from a life of worldly ambitions to one of deep devotion and charity serves as a model for believers.

 

The Feast of St. Augustine is celebrated every year on August 28, commemorating the day of his death in 430 AD.

 

St. Augustine is revered as the patron saint of brewers, a testament to his conversion from a life of indulgence to one of spiritual rigor.

 

His legacy as a theologian, preacher, and monastic leader has made a lasting impact on the Catholic Church.

 

St. Augustine was a prolific writer, accomplished preacher, and one of the greatest saints in the history of Christianity.

 

He was baptized, became a priest, bishop, and ultimately a significant Catholic writer and founder of religious communities.

 

He died at the age of 75 as North Africa faced invasion by the Vandals, and the Church was in turmoil.

 

His remains, initially taken to Sardinia, now rest in the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia, Italy.

 

Augustine University, named in honor of this preeminent Catholic Doctor of the Church, celebrates his feast day as a reminder of the values and teachings that continue to inspire the institution’s mission.
