Belgium Sack Domenico Tedesco After Euro 2024, Nations League Disappointments

- Belgium sacks coach Domenico Tedesco after disappointing Euro 2024 and Nations League campaigns.
- RBFA highlights Tedesco’s efforts to integrate young talent but opts for a new direction ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
- Leading candidates for the vacant position include Thierry Henry, Rudi Garcia, and Mark van Bommel.
Belgium’s football association (RBFA) announced on Friday the dismissal of national team coach Domenico Tedesco following disappointing performances at Euro 2024 and in the Nations League.
“Regrettably, the Red Devils did not achieve the results we hoped for at Euro 2024, nor in the subsequent Nations League campaign,” the RBFA stated on its website.
Tedesco, appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez, was tasked with rebuilding the squad after the departure of the country’s “golden generation.” While Belgium qualified for Euro 2024, they were eliminated in the last 16 by France, who went on to defeat them twice more in the Nations League, leaving the Red Devils third in their group. They now face a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.

“I was always proud to coach the Red Devils, and we achieved great things together,” Tedesco said. “This team is still in its early stages of development and will make a big impact in the coming years. I wish the players, the federation staff, and the fans all the best.”
The decision to part ways had been anticipated for weeks but was delayed by financial complexities within the RBFA. Tedesco, 39, was under contract until 2026, earning an estimated annual salary of €1.7 million ($1.75 million). Five members of his support and coaching staff were also dismissed.
RBFA CEO Peter Willems praised Tedesco’s contributions: “Domenico started strong as national coach and demonstrated that the team could achieve great things even after the transition from the previous generation. He integrated young talent, providing a foundation for his successor. We thank him and his team for their hard work and dedication.”

The RBFA has not announced a timeline for naming Tedesco’s replacement. Reports suggest that approaches to Sergio Conceicao, Xavi, and Erik ten Hag were unsuccessful. Leading candidates now include Rudi Garcia, Thierry Henry, and Mark van Bommel.
Belgium will begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with an away match against North Macedonia in June.
