The “Cleanest LGA” award was divided into three categories, including Urban, Suburban, and Metropolitan.
While Epe LGA bagged the award for the Urban category, Eredo LCDA, also of Epe Division, won the award for the Suburban category.
Similarly, Yaba LCDA won the cleanest LG in Lagos for the Metropolitan category.
Each of the winners was awarded a Nissan Frontier pick-up truck to aid their environmental sanitation efforts.
The winners were evaluated based on absence of street trading, evidence of Private Sector Partnership (PSP) patronage, market sanitation, general aesthetics, amongst others.
Lagos First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, was the Special Guest of Honour at the event.
Mrs Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs Modupe Akewusola, urged all LGAs in the state to cooperate with the state government to prevent self-inflicted disasters.
“Together, we must rise to arrest problems of poor waste handling, self-inflicted flooding, overgrown vegetation, open defecation, indiscriminate waste dropping, and other forms of environmental infractions in our community,” she said.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tunji Bello, said environmental sanitation is beyond clearing refuse.
“This is not just about carrying refuse alone. How it is disposed, where it is disposed; they are very critical,” he said.
The commissioner, who was the award ceremony’s chief host, said the essence of it is to encourage as many council areas as possible to imbibe the spirit of proper collection and disposal of refuse.
On his part, the host of the programme and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Lagos State, Mobolaji Gaji, said the award presentations were aimed at promoting efficiency, dedication, and diligence in the area of environmental sanitation in the state.
Furthermore, the Chairman, Eredo LCDA, Ismail Akinloye, promised the local council will not rest on its oars.
“The reward for good job is more job. So, we will try as much as possible to intensify efforts in addressing all the gray areas in the environmental sanitation exercise in Eredo LCDA,” the local council boss said.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the Vice Chairman of the Epe LG council, Hon Sikiru Owolomoshe, alongside the Supervisor of Environment, Hon Odupe Tunde and the Head of Environmental Sanitation Department, Mrs Akinlola Mary, received the award on behalf of Epe LG.
The Epe LG council boss, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, was excited about the award having served in the immediate past administration as the Supervisor of Environment and Tourism.
She commended the LG’s environmental team for ensuring they did not derail from the policies laid down during her time as the team leader of the environmental department.
In her remarks, Princess Animashaun noted that she is only doing what she knows how to do best, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of the people of Epe Local Government in the areas of clean and habitable environment, health, infrastructural development amongst others.
Recall that the Epe LG boss earlier this year commenced another phase of desilting the drainages in the area.
She started with the drainage at Alausa street and Popo Oba street to enable free flow of water from source to its destination.
Princess Animashaun has consistently cleared all refuse across Epe LG, while kicking against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads.
The council chairman has assured residents of her unalloyed commitment in making Epe habitable for all and sundry, thereby delivering the gains of democracy to the people at the grassroots.
