Speaking at a ministerial briefing in Abuja, Dr. Alausa said the education program, called T-BET, will begin between May and June 2025.
He explained that the initiative is necessary because many universities are producing graduates without the skills needed in today’s job market. To solve this, graduates with outdated skills will be retrained.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the government is focusing on STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics—and Medical Services. He said, “Our universities must train students in areas where their skills are needed the most.”
The Minister also highlighted a major challenge: Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the world. Of the 15 million children not in school:
40-50% have never attended school.
25% dropped out.
25% are in the Almajiri system (Islamic education without formal learning).
He mentioned that while there is debate about whether Almajiri children should be counted as out-of-school, the government plans to teach them literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills.
Dr. Alausa also revealed that 6 million adolescent girls (ages 12 to 19) are out of school in Nigeria.
The government’s goal is to transform Nigeria’s economy from depending on natural resources to relying on knowledge and skills. He stressed the need to train the youth, as 70% of Nigeria’s population is under 30 years old.
