On Monday, October 11, 2021, the Epe Division Youth Ambassadors, an offshoot of the Lagos Youth Ambassadors under the aegis of the IBILE Youth Project marked the International Day of the Girl-Child with an outreach programme to encourage youths across Epe Division to embrace the enduring possibilities that is replete in the digital world.

The outreach program, organized to commemorate the International Girl-Child Day celebrations tagged “Digital World, Our World,” was held at Epe Girls High School on Monday.

The Divisional Ambassador of the group, Rahmon Saheed, a graduate of Biochemistry from Lagos State University, LASU, said that the inspiration behind the program was to jolt youths across the Division to fully maximize the vacuum of opportunities in the digital world beyond the platitudes of social media and simple search engines.

“We decided to join the United Nations in celebrating the International Girl-Child Day in Epe Girls Highs School, where we discussed at length what technology is and the need for the girls to explore the tech space. We also discussed other topics like mental health and indecent dressing which we discover as some of the menaces that have eaten deep into the morals of our girls,” he stated.

Speaking further, Saheed disclosed that the group is already prepping another program in the pipeline tagged “Consent Before Sex: The Script Before The Show.”

Reflecting on the independence Day drama staged at the Lagos Theatre, Epe, tagged
“Nigeria at 61, Regurgitating the Debilitation of the Past Decades,” Saheed called on Epe youths to change the stereotypical narrative that has placed the Division on an uneven keel with regard to intellectual proficiency and other aspects of development.

“Epe has been consistently tagged as the backward part of Lagos geographically and in terms of intellectual prowess. Our major aim is to challenge and change the narrative of the Epe Division by organising programs, projects, and designing policies that would be implemented by government parastatals. We will surely hoist the flag of excellence in Epe Division,” he averred.

He recalled that the program, which featured music, educative games, spoken word poetry and video documentaries on Nigeria’s political journey before, during and after independence posed a Herculean challenge due to the bottlenecks and procedural hoops they had to surmount before being granted access to the performance venue.

They expressed appreciation to Hon. Wale Raji and called on government officials to help accelerate their richly impactful initiatives by allowing more accessibility to state-owned facilities.

“We had our challenges but we were resilient. All thanks to Almighty Allah and Hon Wale Raji for his financial support at a critical time. He helped cover the fee charged for the venue. It would be encouraging if the Government give room for community engagements to be held at their facilities for free. We are currently planning to hold a program in a facility here in Epe and we were charged NGN 500,000, it is disheartening to go through such stress as youth ambassadors appointed by the State Government itself,” Saheed stated.
