Eko Hot Blog reports that the initiative, led by the Executive Chairman, Rasaki Bamidele Kasali, brought together a broad spectrum of stakeholders including the Onilekki of Lekki,
Oba Liasim Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, council officials, traditional leaders, political actors, religious figures, Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, and members of the public.
The gathering underscored a collective resolve to promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment across Lekki communities, especially as Lagos intensifies efforts to revive environmental sanitation practices.
Addressing participants, Kasali emphasized that environmental laws would be strictly enforced, warning that defaulters would face arrest and possible prosecution.
“Environmental laws will be enforced to the letter. Anyone found violating sanitation regulations will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” he stated.
The chairman outlined key interventions already being deployed by the council to improve sanitation, including the introduction of incinerators, clearance of illegal shanties, and distribution of general waste bins across communities.
“We are taking proactive steps by deploying incinerators, clearing shanties, and ensuring waste bins are available. This is about creating a sustainable and healthy environment for all,” he added.
He further called on residents to take ownership of their environment, urging them to collaborate with authorities in monitoring compliance.
“Residents must serve as the eyes and ears of the government. Environmental responsibility is a collective duty,” Kasali said, while also warning against any form of assault on environmental officers.
He revealed that vigilante teams would soon be inaugurated to monitor sanitation compliance, stressing that no offender would be spared.
Commending traditional leadership, the chairman praised the Onilekki for maintaining high sanitation standards within his domain.
“Kabiyesi has set a strong example by ensuring a clean environment around the palace. He is indeed an ambassador of a clean Lekki,” he noted.
In his remarks, Oba Ogunbekun called for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, particularly targeting households that fail to provide waste bins and individuals engaging in improper waste disposal.
“There must be stricter enforcement against households without waste bins. Open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially along the beachfront, must stop,” the monarch declared.
Also speaking, the General Manager of PSP, Mr. Ilori, assured residents of the affordability and accessibility of waste management services, urging cooperation to achieve effective results.
“Waste management services are affordable. Residents must cooperate with PSP operators to ensure proper disposal and a cleaner environment,” he said.
The advocacy campaign reflects the council’s determination to prevent disease outbreaks, improve public health, and position Lekki LCDA as one of the cleanest councils in Lagos State.
With strong stakeholder engagement and firm policy direction, the initiative signals a new phase of environmental responsibility in Lekki, driven by enforcement, community participation, and sustainable practices.
