In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director-General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., disclosed that the engagement took place on February 12, 2026, in the UK. He noted that the partnership was formally confirmed through official correspondence from RAIB’s Derby Operational Centre, underscoring the institutional significance attached to the collaboration.
According to Badeh Jr., the NSIB delegation participated in a structured peer-review and technical capacity-building mission designed to benchmark Nigeria’s rail accident investigation procedures against globally recognised standards. The exercise also sought to adapt proven investigative models to Nigeria’s rapidly expanding rail network.
He explained that both agencies exchanged expertise on investigative methodologies, quality assurance systems, digital case management processes and investigator competency development.
The Nigerian team was also granted access to RAIB’s specialised investigative facilities and technologies, providing insights into establishing a resilient, technology-driven accident investigation system.

The statement emphasised that as Nigeria expands its intercity rail corridors and urban transit systems, strengthening safety oversight mechanisms is critical. It noted that robust and independent investigations are preventive in nature, generating actionable safety intelligence to guide regulatory reforms, operational improvements and long-term risk mitigation strategies.
While acknowledging progress, the bureau stated that significant work remains. It stressed that building a world-class rail accident investigation unit requires sustained investment in personnel, equipment, systems and a strong institutional culture rooted in rigour and independence.
Badeh Jr. added that investigation recommendations must be implemented by relevant authorities if Nigeria is to attain the status of a developed railway nation. He emphasised that findings should be made publicly accessible and that the Rail Accident Investigation Unit must be adequately staffed and equipped to respond swiftly and professionally to incidents.
The partnership comes at a pivotal time for NSIB, following the enactment of the NSIB Act 2022, which expanded the bureau’s mandate beyond aviation to include rail, marine and other modes of transportation, transforming it into a fully multimodal safety investigation authority.
