The Nigerian Army has launched a comprehensive investigation into an incident on Friday, where a driver crashed into soldiers during a morning drill at Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident took place during a 15-kilometre route march, a standard Army training exercise aimed at enhancing operational readiness.

A high-speed vehicle, driven by the suspected Yahoo boy—believed to have been intoxicated—rammed into the soldiers, leaving many injured. One soldier was confirmed dead, while others are receiving medical treatment.

In a statement, Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 81 Division, confirmed the tragic loss. The statement reads:

“Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to inform the public about a tragic incident that occurred on the morning of Friday, 31 January 2025, during the Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos State.

The route march, an Army training exercise designed to enhance operational readiness, involved NA formations across Lagos. The exercise had earlier been announced on various media platforms to ensure public awareness.

Tragically, a driver in a private vehicle, believed to be a suspected Yahoo boy, recklessly ran into the participating troops, resulting in the death of a soldier and leaving several others injured.

The deceased soldier has been taken to the mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba. The 81 Division Military Police, alongside other security agencies, is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, extends his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and wishes the injured a swift recovery.

He has urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue. The Division remains committed to its training and operational duties despite this devastating loss.

Furthermore, this tragedy will not diminish the Division’s dedication to securing the lives and property within its operational area, in line with the Army’s constitutional mandate.”
