Seyi Tinubu Under Fire for Participating in Military-like Guard of Honor Review

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, have criticised Seyi Tinubu, one of President Bola Tinubu’s sons, for reviewing a military-like guard of honor mounted by a group of youths in military uniforms.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the two leaders condemned the incident after a viral video showed Seyi reviewing the guard of honor in Ogun State. Atiku called for a thorough investigation into the event, describing it as a serious breach of military tradition. George labeled the act as unprecedented and inappropriate.

In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku expressed shock over the video, which showed a group of young men in military-style attire and armed with firearms honoring the President’s son.

Atiku emphasised that such a parade should never be organized for a non-designated public figure, highlighting that the group involved, called the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” is not a recognized entity in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Atiku further criticized the use of the title “Cadet,” which is traditionally reserved for trained military personnel, and the illegal display of firearms by civilians.

He called for an investigation into the legitimacy of the group, its weapons, and the propriety of granting military-like honors to Seyi Tinubu. He stressed that Nigerian security agencies must ensure those responsible are held accountable if any legal violations were committed.

In his own statement, Bode George referred to the act as “irresponsible” and advised Seyi to avoid engaging in actions that could harm his reputation or that of his father. He reminded that, even during Nigeria’s military era, the children of Heads of State never performed such duties.

He pointed out that former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s son, despite being a Brigadier in the Nigerian Army, never represented his father in such a manner.

George urged Seyi Tinubu to distance himself from actions or individuals that might encourage him to take on controversial or inappropriate roles. He emphasized the need for decorum and respect for boundaries to preserve public trust in leadership.
