Supreme Court Sacks Shekarau As Kano Central Senator-elect

  • Shekarau will not be returning to the senate until at least 2027.

  • He had won the Kano Central senatorial district election.

  • But the Supreme Court has ruled that he wasn’t the authentic candidate of his party.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Supreme Court has sacked former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, as the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano Central senatorial district.

The sack automatically removes him as the district’s senator-elect.

EDITOR’S PICKS

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Shekarau the winner of the February 25 Kano Central senatorial election.

Before the election, the Federal High Court, Abuja, and the Court of Appeal had removed the former Kano governor as the NNPP senatorial candidate for Kano Central following his resignation from the party due to alleged irreconcilable differences.

The lower courts held that Shekarau was therefore unqualified to remain the party’s candidate.

The high court declared Rufai Hanga as the authentic senatorial candidate of the NNPP for Kano Central and the appellate court affirmed the judgement.

Dissatisfied with the rulings of the lower courts, INEC approached the Supreme Court to set them aside and reinstate Shekarau’s candidacy.

In a ruling on Friday, the apex court upheld the verdicts of the high court and appeal court, which affirmed Hanga’s candidature.

The judgement, prepared by Justice Uwani Aba-Aji but delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, held that INEC’s appeal lacked merit and substance.

The Supreme Court justices, therefore, dismissed the appeal.
