EKO HOT BLOG reports that reports from Punch highlight a heavy presence of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and police bomb squad vehicles stationed at strategic locations across Jos and its outskirts.
Heavily armed security operatives are on high alert, particularly around the PLSIEC headquarters on John Samci Road, where access to surrounding streets has been blocked off.
Key roads leading into and out of Jos have been sealed by security personnel since 7 a.m., causing thorough checks at various security checkpoints. Individuals on essential duties, including journalists, have faced rigorous screening before being granted passage.
A security official, speaking anonymously, explained that the deployment was in response to directives aimed at maintaining law and order during the election process. “We are here to enforce peace. That’s our mission,” the officer said.
PLSIEC Chairman, Plangji Cishak, had earlier assured Plateau residents of the commission’s commitment to a credible election, despite earlier delays due to nationwide protests.
He also acknowledged Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s support while emphasizing the Governor’s respect for PLSIEC’s operational independence.
As of the time of this report, voting has commenced in the local government areas, with strict security supervision in place to safeguard the process.
