Canada, Mexico Hit Back, Vow to Counter Trump’s 25% Tariffs

- Canada and Mexico’s leaders vow retaliation against U.S. after Trump imposes 25% tariffs.
- Trudeau and Sheinbaum coordinate efforts to push back against U.S. tariffs targeting their economies.
- Canada announces 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, impacting various sectors.
Canada and Mexico’s leaders condemned President Trump’s new 25% tariffs on their countries Saturday, vowing swift retaliation against the U.S.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo had agreed to coordinate efforts to counter Trump’s tariff policy, which he justified as a measure to curb drug trafficking into the U.S.
In addition to tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, the U.S. imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods and Canadian energy exports. In response, Canada plans to levy a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of American products, including beer, wine, bourbon, fruits, vegetables, perfumes, clothing, and shoes.

“This will deeply affect many of us. Dark times are ahead,” Trudeau warned, urging Canadians to support one another and consider boycotting American goods like Florida orange juice.
With just six weeks left in office, Trudeau denounced the tariffs as a “threat targeting the entire country” and cautioned that they would have severe consequences for the U.S. as well.
“Yes, this will hurt Canadians, but it will also put American jobs at risk, potentially shutting down auto plants and manufacturing facilities,” he said. “Grocery prices will rise, and fuel will become more expensive.”
He further accused Trump of betraying Canada, its closest ally and trading partner, and revealed that he had been unable to speak with the U.S. president since his inauguration last week. However, he remains committed to finding a resolution without resorting to tariffs.
When asked about Trump’s threat to escalate tariffs if Canada retaliates, Trudeau made it clear that he would not back down, emphasizing that all provincial leaders support countermeasures.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo also ordered retaliatory tariffs and rejected Trump’s claim that her government harbours ties to criminal organizations and drug cartels.
“If any such alliance exists, it is in the U.S. armories that supply high-powered weapons to these groups, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year,” she wrote on X.

“If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious consumption of fentanyl in their country, they could, for example, combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their main cities, which they do not do, and the money laundering generated by this illegal activity that has done so much harm to their population,”
Sheinbaum said she had told her economy minister “to implement Plan B” which she said “includes tariff and non-tariff measures” though it was not clear what those measures were exactly.
“To this end, I propose to President Trump that we establish a working group with our best public health and security teams. Problems are not resolved by imposing tariffs, but by talking and dialoguing, as we did in recent weeks with your State Department to address the phenomenon of migration; in our case, with respect for human rights,” Sheinbaum said.
China also responded to Trump tariffs against them by saying they will bring a complaint to the World Trade Organization and that they would take “corresponding countermeasures to resolutely safeguard our own rights and interests”.
“China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposes this,” Beijing’s commerce ministry said in a statement.
