The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed a viral WhatsApp post claiming a kidnapping incident along the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka Road on January 28, 2025.
The post, which suggested that four individuals were abducted and taken into the bush near Api-Opi, was flagged as false after an investigation.

Police spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe clarified in a statement on Friday that no such incident occurred on the said day and time. “The claim that four persons were kidnapped is entirely untrue and clearly intended to incite fear,” Ndukwe said.
He emphasized that the incident described in the post did not happen, nor were there any reports of kidnappers operating freely for over 30 minutes on a well-patrolled road.
The police further assured the public that the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road is heavily monitored by security forces, making such an event highly unlikely.
Ndukwe stated that the information circulating was “baseless” and labeled it a product of misinformation.
Enugu’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, strongly condemned the spread of the false claim and urged the individuals responsible to provide evidence or face the consequences of spreading panic-inducing falsehoods.

“The Commissioner has directed the Command’s intelligence and tactical units to trace and apprehend those behind the post and ensure they are prosecuted,” Ndukwe added.
The police’s swift response aims to reassure the public and serve as a reminder of the consequences of circulating unverified information.
