Group Releases Number Of Suspects That Have Been Found Guilty Of Rape In Nigeria Since 1975

- Fight against sexual violence and abuse continues to gain traction as the Women, Law and Development Initiative (WORDI) issues new statement.
- They revealed the number of suspects that have been found guilty of rape in Nigeria since 1975.
The information was made available by the President of WOLDI Africa, Dr. Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau, recently at a one day Consultative Meeting on COVID-19 Related Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) which was held in Abuja.
Speaking further during the event organized by WORDI and WOLDI and the Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF-Africa) COVID-19 Support Project, Dr. Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau stated that 32 of the 65 convictions happened during and before 2015 while 33 took place after 2015 till date.
In her words, “In fact, only 65 suspects have been found guilty of rape in Nigeria in the last 46 years (that is since 1975), 32 of these convictions took place during and before 2015 while 33 took place after 2015.”
Dr Hauwa who is also the founder of WORDI explained that police officers are not equipped with the knowledge and training to deal with GBV cases effectively, noting that others are of the opinion that such cases are domestic matters, therefore, and are outside of their jurisdiction.
According to her, some women have suffered intimidation and assault from the police when reporting rape cases. She added that the justice system hasn’t done much to curtail GBV as perpetrators often escape conviction, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
Some Nigerians have expressed disbelief at the conviction figure as they task the Nigerian Judicial system to do more to protect women and reduce GBV cases.
