United States President Donald Trump could soon become the face of a proposed $250 banknote in a move that may overturn a long-standing American tradition regarding national currency.
Reports on Thursday indicated that discussions are underway over a possible redesign of the note to feature Trump’s portrait as part of activities connected to America’s 250th independence anniversary, Eko Hot Blog reports.

If eventually approved, the development would make Trump the first living individual to appear on US paper currency in more than a century.
Sources familiar with the proposal said officials within the Treasury Department had encouraged the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to begin exploring possible prototype designs for the note.

The proposed design is also expected to include references to the country’s 250th Independence Day celebration scheduled for July 4, 2026.
However, the idea has reportedly generated controversy within government circles because existing federal laws prohibit the use of images of living presidents on American currency.
Officials at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing were said to have raised concerns over the legal implications of the proposal and warned that implementing such a plan could face serious procedural obstacles.
Reports further claimed that Patricia Solimene, the bureau’s director, resisted the initiative before she was later moved from her position.
The latest development adds to a growing list of efforts by Trump’s allies to attach his image and name to public institutions and commemorative projects.
Earlier in the year, a federal arts commission approved plans for a special gold coin commemorating America’s 250th anniversary during a meeting involving officials appointed during Trump’s administration.
Trump’s branding has also reportedly appeared in connection with institutions such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the US Institute of Peace.

In addition, banners carrying his image have been displayed at some federal agencies, while reports suggest future passport designs may also incorporate his likeness.
Although legislation seeking to authorise the $250 bill was introduced in Congress last year, it has not yet advanced significantly.
A spokesperson for the Treasury Department said officials were carrying out preliminary reviews and planning concerning the proposal.
Critics, particularly among Democrats, have condemned the idea, describing it as an unnecessary attempt to elevate Trump’s personal image through government institutions.
