NIMR DG Prof Obafunwa Reflects on Strategic Partnership with JICA to Enhance Medical Research in Nigeria
The Director General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. John Obafunwa, recently announced the institute’s commitment to advancing medical research in Nigeria.
He made this statement while hosting a delegation of nine medical experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at NIMR’s headquarters in Yaba, Lagos.
The delegation visited to establish a strategic partnership to enhance medical research capabilities, foster international cooperation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and build research capacity in Nigeria.
In his welcome address, Prof. Obafunwa highlighted NIMR’s ongoing efforts to improve research standards, effectively disseminate findings, and create a supportive environment for health research and training.
He emphasized that the meeting provided an opportunity to explore collaborative avenues and discuss NIMR’s research focus, which encompasses various areas, including pathogens, viral culturing, and other critical medical domains.
Obafunwa stated, “This partnership with JICA marks a significant milestone for NIMR and the future of medical research in Nigeria. Together, we can enhance our capabilities and significantly impact health outcomes.”
He said, “At NIMR, we are dedicated to advancing the standards of medical research. This collaboration will strengthen our research initiatives and cultivate a culture of innovation and excellence in healthcare.”
Prof. Obafunwa reaffirmed NIMR’s commitment to advancing medical research, sharing research outcomes, and creating a conducive environment for health research and training.
The JICA delegation expressed great interest in NIMR’s ongoing projects, including HIV research and pathological studies.
NIMR representatives, including Dr. Nelson Bitrus, Dr. Rosemary Audu, and Dr. Bamidele Iwatokun, among others, actively engaged with the JICA team, which included Mr. Kenji Otsuka, Mr. Tadakz Suzuki, and Mr. Shiyeoshi Harada.
