Breaking: NLC to Hold Nationwide Anti-Telecom Hike Protest Tuesday

- NLC plans nationwide protest against 50% telecom tariff hike.
- The union calls the hike an unfair burden on workers.
- NLC threatens telecom boycott if the increase isn’t reversed.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, to express opposition to the Federal Government’s recent approval of a 50 percent increase in telecom tariffs.
The move is part of the NLC’s mobilization to resist the hike, which it says will worsen the already dire economic conditions faced by Nigerian workers and citizens.

The NLC, which rejected the tariff increase on January 22, is calling on the government to reconsider its decision.
The union argues that the hike, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), comes at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship.
The NLC has described the increase as an “assault” on the welfare of workers, warning that it would only deepen the poverty levels across the country.
In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the approval of the tariff hike, highlighting the disproportionate burden it would place on the average Nigerian worker.
He pointed out that many workers already spend approximately 10 percent of their monthly salary on telecommunications services. For example, a worker earning the current minimum wage of N70,000 would see their telecom expenses rise from N7,000 to N10,500, which would account for 15 percent of their income.
Ajaero criticized the government for prioritizing corporate interests over the welfare of the people, calling the timing of the hike especially troubling.
He compared the swift approval of the tariff increase to the long delays in approving the recent minimum wage increase, which took nearly a year despite the rising cost of living and inflation.
The NLC has called on the government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to halt the implementation of the hike and engage in a dialogue to find a more reasonable solution.

The union has also threatened a nationwide boycott of telecom services if the increase is not reversed, urging citizens to join in the collective action to resist what it sees as an unjustifiable burden.
“This is a fight for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people,” Ajaero declared, reaffirming the NLC’s commitment to defending the interests of Nigerian workers and citizens.
The union’s stance underscores its belief that government policies should prioritize the needs of the people over corporate profits, particularly in times of economic struggle.
