The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order on Monday reinstating the death penalty for severe crimes.

The order, titled “Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety,” marks a significant policy shift and reverses several measures introduced by former President Joe Biden.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Trump signed approximately 200 executive actions, memoranda, and proclamations on his first day in office. These measures aimed to undo much of the Biden administration’s policies, including the 2021 moratorium on federal executions.

In the order, Trump criticized what he described as the “subversion of law” by politicians and judges who obstruct capital punishment. He declared the necessity of ensuring capital sentences are carried out effectively.

“It is the policy of the United States to ensure that the laws authorizing capital punishment are respected and faithfully implemented, countering the actions of those who subvert the law by obstructing and preventing lawful executions,” the President stated.

The directive mandates the Attorney General to pursue the death penalty for crimes of extreme severity, particularly federal capital offenses involving:

  • The murder of a law-enforcement officer.
  • A capital crime committed by an undocumented immigrant.

Trump’s statement emphasized that capital punishment is a vital tool for deterring and punishing heinous crimes, asserting its historical significance and public support.

“Capital punishment has always served as an essential tool for deterring and punishing those who commit the most heinous acts of violence against American citizens. From the founding of the United States, capital punishment has been the ultimate deterrent and the appropriate response to the vilest crimes,” the executive order read.

Trump also criticized the Biden administration for commuting the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates in late 2024, whom he described as “remorseless criminals” guilty of barbaric acts such as child molestation, murder, and rape. He argued that such actions undermined justice and insulted the victims of these crimes.

“These efforts to subvert and undermine capital punishment defy the laws of our nation, mock justice, and insult victims of these horrific crimes. My administration will ensure the laws authorizing capital punishment are faithfully executed to protect American citizens from abhorrent acts of violence,” Trump concluded.
