EKO HOT BLOG reports that reports had emerged that security escorts assigned to Meranda’s office and residence were withdrawn, raising concerns over political interference.
The situation intensified when security details of impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa were restored. Shortly after, Obasa stormed the Assembly complex, declared himself Speaker, and presided over a controversial plenary session with only a few lawmakers in attendance.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed the reinstatement of four security personnel attached to Speaker Meranda. He dismissed claims of political motivation, stating that the withdrawal was part of a nationwide audit of police personnel and firearms.
“The withdrawal of security details attached to the Speaker and other VIPs in the state is in line with an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms,” Jimoh clarified. He added that similar measures were being implemented across other state police commands, emphasizing that Lagos was not singled out.
